Sunday Sweets

October 8, 2017

Anyone else read Cake Wrecks? After a week of hilarity, they post truly gorgeous cake creations on Sunday and call it Sunday Sweets. I'm stealing that title.

Yesterday my family went to the annual Greek Festival at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. The festival is an elbow-to-elbow affair of awesome people in cool clothes eating the most delicious food they'll have all week. Gyros, souvlaki, baklava, roasted lamb...and our family favorite, loukoumades.

Loukoumades are a sweet dessert dumpling, as one of the loukoumades makers cried out one year "Just flour yeast eggs!" Simple and wholesome, deep fried, doused in honey, and sprinkled with cinnamon. My 13 year old daughter, between bites, reminded us that honey is a preservative, it is an antiseptic, it's healing properties well known for hundreds of years. It help control allergies, if you eat honey produced from things you are allergic too. Cinnamon, she reminded us, calms your insulin production. Eating cinnamon with your sweets is a way to enjoy the sugars but keep diabetes at bay.

I've never been a big honey fan, and with a beeswax allergy {I break out in a rash if I use it on my skin} I tend to avoid honey. Filtering honey is imperfect and sometimes those proteins in the beeswax that make me break out, are present in the honey.

But none of that matters during Greek festival. The first weekend of October everyone here is Greek, and I eat enough loukoumades to make up for being anglo-saxon the rest of the year.

Psalm 19 Is a love song to God's law. Comparing it, in verse 1o, to honey. It is sweet, but we also know that honey is soothing, refreshing, reviving, encouraging, heartening, and flat out healing. And so is God's law. Which is why we need it on more than just Sunday. {Me, reminding myself.}

Psalm 19
The law of the Lord is perfect,
    refreshing the soul.
The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy,
    making wise the simple.
8 The precepts of the Lord are right,
    giving joy to the heart.
The commands of the Lord are radiant,
    giving light to the eyes.
9 The fear of the Lord is pure,
    enduring forever.
The decrees of the Lord are firm,
    and all of them are righteous.

10 They are more precious than gold,
    than much pure gold;
they are sweeter than honey,
    than honey from the honeycomb

Want to try loukoumedes but don't have your own Greek Festival? Be brave and make them! http://allrecipes.com/recipe/212392/loukoumades/
